Grandmaster Tran
The sad news has now been confirmed with regards to the search for Grandmaster Tran from the aftermath of the Haiti earthquake. Our thoughts and sympathies go to his family on this sad day.
The following has been taken from the ITF website:
It is with great sadness that the ITF inform you all of the tragic death of our President Grand Master TrânTriêu Quân, 9th Degree Black Belt, following the recent earthquake in Haiti. We have just received information from the Trân family regarding the discovery of Grand Master Trân from the rubble of the Hotel Montana in Port-au-Prince, Haiti. His body was found under several tons of debris. His death was confirmed by an official of the Embassy of Canada in Haiti. His identity was confirmed by the Disaster Victim Identification assessment team working in Haiti with the Consular Affairs Bureau of Foreign Affairs Canada. His body will be repatriated to Canada on Sunday, February 14. Our thoughts go to the Trân family. We wish to extend our most sincere condolences to them.Speaking from Argentina, Senior Vice-President Grand Master Pablo Trajtenberg stated: “We are so sorry to hear about Grand Master Trân’s death. We are still in shock. ITF and Taekwon-Do have lost a very strong and devoted leader, a great defender of our art in the tradition of our Founder, General Choi Hong Hi. He will remain forever a model that will inspire us all. We wish to extend our deepest sympathies to Grand Master Trân’s dear wife, Mrs. Nguyen Thi My; his children, Joliette, Cécilia and Nicolas; his son-in-law, François Beaudin; his grandchildren, Jasmine and Sandrine; his brothers, Trân Triêu Cung and Trân Triêu Lân; and all the Trân and Nguyen extended families. The fact that Grand Master Trân lost his life in a country such as Haiti is meaningful because he strongly believed in the contribution of Taekwon-Do to the building of strong citizenship qualities in developing countries. He had set time aside to meet with a group of Taekwon-Do students during his stay in Port-au-Prince. We already miss him.”All Taekwon-Do practitioners from around the world are kindly invited to write memories of Grand Master Trân or words of sympathy to the Trân family on the following ITF web page: http://www.itfnz.org.nz/commemorative/grand-master-tran-condolence.html. Grand Master Trân was President of the ITF since 2003. He had been re-elected to serve for a second term in 2007.
The ITF Board stands united with you in your sympathies for our beloved President and his family. We believe the bond and friendships between all our nations will be forever strengthened and remain strong.

2009 review
2009 was a very good year for the club.
- We took a total of 45 medals including 16 golds as well as 3 best competitor trophies at both competitions and almost took the title of best club at the November coming a very close second to Mr Stronach's Reflex TKD club by just one gold.
- We held 4 gradings during the year that were well attended by students that had reached the required standard.
- We started a new class night at West Road Centre for sport on Tuesday evenings and started Little Dragon classes at Rowlands Gill and Ryton. Squad training has been held building up to the November competition which proved very successful.
- We held two little Dagon gradings at Ryton in the second part of the year which were very well attended.
- We completed two excellent demonstrations at the Ryton Hirings Festival and the Newcatle Mela which proved very popular and feedback was excellent.
- We also hosted a sparring seminar in which we invited Mr Grant Churchward 4th Degree from Devon to take the club through some great sparring drills.
Christmas party seemed to be a big success at the Namco bowling centre we had almost 100 people in attendance.
Students of the year awards were introduced with the following winners:-

Best Junior Competitor - Sean Ranson
Most Improved Senior- Jake Rutherford
Most Improved Junior- Megan Vince
Hardest working female dragon- Jade O Connor
Most Improved female dragon - Iona Cooper
